Assembly Lines
Thanks to Henry Ford, many mass production procedure use
assembly lines. Henry
Ford experimented with power-driven conveyor systems, which carried
subassemblies to the workers at a correct height and speed, each worker
then performed a specialized assembly task at a fixed workstation,
doubling productivity. Before Henry Fords conveyor system, workers had
to physically carry the product to the next station. Many times
this task was given to a child laborer, in some factories they were
called runners, because they had to run from one station to the next.
Any slowdown in production was usually blamed on the runner.
