The manufacturer representative either can be a self-employed sales person or employed by the manufacture. The self-employed representatives can represents more than one product line that are not competitors. The manufactures representative is his own businessman, hiring his own office personal. Both the self-employed and those employed by the manufacturer must travel to their clients and if needed entertain them. The majority of the manufacturer representatives are exclusively paid on commission, which generally command a percentage of their generate.

Both the company-hired and manufacturer representative are responsible for creating new sales, managing all existing accounts, as well as dealing with any and all client concerns. In addition to these duties, the manufacturer representative represents the product lines he sales at trade shows and conventions. If he represents more than one line, then he may present a complete package of numerous corresponding products to his client.

A good manufacturer rep will be knowledgeable and believe fully in the products he represents. In addition to his knowledge and belief, he must also be an excellent salesperson, which enjoys networking with people, as well as have the ability to manage time wisely.

Numerous manufacturer representatives who do not have the benefit of a college degree are very successful, however in today's world it is advisable for a prospective  candidate to pursue a degree, in sales or marketing. The increased competition for sales positions and the every increasing technical training necessary for many product lines requires the need of a college education.
