What is
Manufacturing?
According to Webster's, Manufacturing is the making of
goods or wares by manual
labor or by machinery, especially on a large scale, from raw materials
or unfinished
materials. It is the making of a finished product or good.
Handcraft production has been with us since the Stone Age. Our
modern-way of manufacturing
only truly began with the British Industrial Revolution, which soon
spread around
the world. This revolution launched mass production, standardization,
and job opportunities
for unskilled labors. It also brought about competitiveness with
companies wanting
to sale their product to the limited number of consumers of that time.
Many of
the factory work forces during this revolution could not afford to
purchase the
product they were manufacturing.
Today, manufacturing remains an enormous part of the worlds economy. As
it was
during the British Industrial Revolution, many of the world's wealthier
nations
devote a small percentage of their workforce to manufacturing. Many
major corporations
have relocated their enterprises to low-wage countries, so they can hold
down the
cost of manufacturing while increasing the service activity. All this is
in hope
of capturing the interest of the consumer.
I guess my Grandmother was right---History does repeat itself.
